Link of the Month
We will from time to time update this section with a new link and provide a brief profile about the site featured. If you have services that would interest our clients, please contact us so we can include you.
This month we feature the United Nations Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which is serviced by a joint Secretariat, and consists of staff of both the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), based in New York, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva.
The Convention is significant as it marks a "paradigm shift" in attitudes and approaches to persons with disabilities. It takes to a new height the movement from viewing persons with disabilities as "objects" of charity, medical treatment and social protection towards viewing persons with disabilities as "subjects" with rights, who are capable of claiming those rights and making decisions for their lives based on their free and informed consent as well as being active members of society.
The Convention is also this years theme for International Day of Disabilities on December 3 "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Dignity and justice for all of us". Workability will be running events to celebrate this occasion, so please check back on www.workability.org.au for future updates about events.
